Ge Fei’s novels have been written for more than thirty years, during which time his novels have undergone great changes. In the 1980 s,Ge Fei emerged as a representative writer of avant-garde literature, creating a series of experimental novels. His works are known for repetitive, vacant narrative strategies and maze-like narrative structures.By the mid-1990 s,the avant-garde color in Ge Fei’s writing has weakened, and the content has returned to daily trivial, representing the spiritual dilemma of people during the era of transformation.Few in number,Ge Fei’s novels in this period mainly consisted of short stories. It was not until 2004 that Ge Fei returned to the literary world with his novel Face Peach Blossom, which suddenly caught the critics’ eye and made them pay attention to Ge Fei as well as the new possibility of Chinese writing. This paper attempts to conduct an overall study of Ge fei’s novels to explore the transformation of those works and the potential for further creation. The paper divides Ge Fei’s creation into three stages.Specifically, the early stage is from the publication of Remembering Mr.Wu You in 1986 to that of The Banner of Desire in 1995;the medium stage is from 1995 to 2004;and since 2004,his creation has stepped into the later stage represented by“ The Trilogy of Jiangnan ”.The full text includes three chapters, which mainly discuss the transformation of Ge Fei’s novel creation from three perspectives. The first chapter introduces the change of Ge Fei’s novel conception. That is,the alteration from focusing on modernism to realism. The author analyzed the transformation in Ge Fei’s novel conception from the perspectives of reality,space-time and history, respectively. The second chapter examines the changes in Ge Fei’s novel ideological orientation. There are three main aspects to this transformation: from the emptiness of meaning to the clarity of meaning;from repeatedly rendering the plight of the characters’ spirit to giving them salvation and comfort;from the character’s fate being tightly controlled by desire to achieving detachment from desire. As a result,Ge Fei’s creation is implemented to the specific problems faced by people and has realistic orientation. The third chapter give an analysis of the transformation of Ge Fei’s novel creation from the perspective of narratology. It mainly makes a contrastive study between the thin character image in his early novels and the rich character in later ones.It also discusses the employment of traditional narrative strategy and the shiftof the language of the novel from the westernized long sentence to the implicitized classical language. The conclusion part evaluates and summarizes the transformation of Ge Fei’s novel creation. To be specific,he did not give up the modernist narrative skills while he took Chinese traditional literature for reference.Instead,he integrated them and explored new ways of writing.
