Doris Lessing( 1919-2013) is considered as one of the most outstanding contemporary English women writers who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 2007. She is a prolific writer. Lessing has penned more than 50 books, including novels, dramas, operas, poetry, story, collections, non-fictions, autobiography etc.Mara and Dann: An Adventure published in 1999. This novel is filled of imagination。The novel is set in a physical and spiritual wasteland which contains the dystopian thoughts. Such rich text provides various possibilities for us to accept and interpret it from different angles. Dystopian uses terrible fantasy replaced the great ideals for the future of the world. By employing the dystopian thoughts, Lessing intends to send warning signals to human beings.This thesis consists of six parts including an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The first part contains a general introduction to Doris Lessing and her work Mara and Dann, and a literature review. The first chapter deals with the cause and characteristics of dystopian thoughts. Dystopian uses terrible fantasy replaced the great ideals for the future of the world. Dystopian thought is not the simple denial of modernity. Dystopian not deny freedom, equality, rationality of science, but worry about people too superstitious about these principle. Then, the second chapter analyzed the cause of Doris Lessing’s dystopian thoughts which are Lessing’s culture background and the impact of wars. The third chapter elaborates on the dystopian thoughts in Mara and Dann. The fourth chapter discusses about the intention of Doris Lessing’s dystopian thoughts. Finally, the conclusive part restates Lessing’s dystopian thoughts and motives, which offers a wider backdrop for understanding the pursuing spirit.
