Jennet Winterson is a contemporary British woman writer with a unique and strong personality. She is good at adopting post-modern narrative techniques in creation and shows explanation of great significance, single evaluation criteria as well as denounces, therefore she has characteristics in post-modern writers. However she regards “life” as an ultimate being, a shelter from loneliness available for all individuals that struggle to find a sense to their lives.This thesis develops from 3 aspects including self-discovery, communication among individuals as well as existence of individuals in social system to develop individual consciousness in Winterson’s novel and discuss her consideration of individual difficulties and exploration of ways so that shows unique value of her novel.This thesis is composed of three parts including the introduction, the text as well as the epilogue. The introduction gives a brief introduction of Jeannet Winterson’s life and works.The introduction gives a brief look at Jeannet’s life and her works, and also an overview to the studies related to her around the world. It then reveals the topic ideas and its research value.The text is divided into 3 chapters, the first chapter starts from deconstruction method of the writer and discusses how Winterson gets rid of shelter of grand narrative such as history and myth in her novel from awakening of individuality and shows individual unique feelings and understanding of meaning of life. The second chapter discusses the writer has used parody to reveal depression of ethics on communication of emotions and individual resistance from communication between individual and others. The third chapter mainly discusses writer’s criticism on modern civilization and salvation consciousness of lives, pointing out that her novel shows danger faced with individual life consciousness in social system in modern times and demonstrating repeated consideration of the writer between defending individual life consciousness and integrating into modern society. The epilogue starts from Winterson’s unique artistic view and outlook on life and demonstrates individual life’s ultimate pursuit in her novel.From fighting against external world to finding balance between adhering to self and integrating to the society, Winterson’s consideration of individual life consciousness is a process of development. Her novel carries the writer’s consideration of living conditions of people in modern times with complicated and exquisite structure and smart, magnificent language, which provides individual lives with the place where to take a rest in art.
