Commenting On Fan Xiaoqing’s Folk Consciousness In Her Novels

Fan Xiaoqing’s novel, based on her undramatic and leisurely description, demonstrated a secular civil society to readers in a simple but embellished account and revealed authentic life and the spiritual world of the common people in such a civil society. Also, this novel discloses that this author had a strong folk consciousness, arousing a great deal of attention from the field of contemporary literature.This paper mainly focuses on and discusses novels created by Fan Xiaoqing. And the author will elaborately Fan’s folk consciousness embodied in her works. The first chapter mainly deals with some examples of the folk consciousness reflected in her works. In this part, the author will analyze all examples from three perspectives, including her attention paid to people living in the bottom, her preference to and agreement on values rooted in the underclass and her vivid depictions of poor and miserable life. Through her different depictions in novels, she expressed, on the behalf of those common people striving further, truly depicted details of daily life and various folk customs, lifestyles and dreams harbored by common citizens, praising those who living in the bottom for their perseverance. Then, the author will analyze concrete representations of Fan’s folk consciousness from the perspective of artist representations in the second chapter. Also, in this part, the author will analyze civilian features of her depictions from perspectives of civilian diction, narrative styles and utilization of various folk arts. It again clearly discloses that she is on the behalf of the common people in such a folk society. In the third part, the author will further analyze how her folk consciousness came about. The author will discuss the reasons why she had strong consciousness of folklore from perspectives of her experiences of living in lanes in Suzhou and countrysides as one of those educated youths as well as effects of Buddhism in the region where she lives. Through careful analyses, the author holds the view that her experiences and Buddhism flourishing in this area stimulate the appearing of her folk consciousness.In a word, as a famous female writer in contemporary China, Fan, on the behalf of common people, shapes a series of characters in her novels, revealing authentic life and rich spirits of people living in the bottom in contemporary China in various representations full of civilian features. The reason why Fan insists on paying attention to common citizens, trying hard to get closer to them and creating novels based on them is that she always adhere to the folk consciousness in her creations of works.
