The Tales of Overseas Trip is a travels written by Zhang Deyi, who is the member of the earliest Chinese mission which visited the west. It contains 8 volumes, and describes the overseas views what Zhang saw from 1866 to 1906. The first two volumes were written from 1866 to 1869 when the Opium War was failed, and recorded that the mission visited the west firstly. This paper selects the loanwords in the first two volumes as the object of study, and analyzes them from an all-around point of view, making a combination of statistics and analysis, description and explanation, in order to grasp the development of loanwords in Late-Qing Dynasty just after Opium War.The article can be divided into six parts.The first part is the introduction, illustrates the writing background and content of The Tales of Overseas Trip (two volumes) briefly. At the same time, define the range of the loanwords. Review the research findings and points out the study capabilities afterwards. Finally, put forward the significance and method of this article.The second part analyzes the types of the loanwords in The Tales of Overseas Trip (two volumes). It classifies the loanwords into three categories:social life, culture and science, political and economy. After that, analyzes the loanwords by selecting some representative words. Finally, describes them from the translating way which includes the transliteration, half transliteration and half free translation, transliteration and free translation, loan morphology from Japanese and free translation.The third part studies the inner part of the loanwords in The Tales of Overseas Trip (two volumes). It mainly discusses the formation of the loanwords and researches the feature of Chinese characters in transliteration words. On the basis of the study above, summarizes the characteristics of loanwords.The fourth part makes a comparison between loanwords in The Tales of Overseas Trip (two volumes) and the modern Chinese lexicons from the diachronic level, which can be inspects from three aspects:the words which continued to use in modern Chinese, which can be used after transforming and which were disappeared in modern Chinese. At last, discusses the rule of to being Chinese words.The fifth part interprets the cultural factors reflected by the loanwords in The Tales of Overseas Trip (two volumes), which is based on the theory of the relationship between language and culture from The West and China reflected by the loanwords.The sixth part is the conclusion which concludes the main viewpoint of the article and research work.
