Indonesia is the biggest country in the Southeast Asia with the largest population. Speaking of the social constitution, it is a multi-ethnical, multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-lingual country. The most prominent minority in Indonesia is Chinese. Although Chinese group only accounted for 5% of the whole population, the total number has already reached 12 million. Indonesia is a country with the largest number of overseas Chinese in the world today. More importantly, Chinese group played a decisive role in Indonesian politics and economy, and made a great contribution in the historical development of Indonesia.Indonesia had ever been colonized by Dutch, Britain, France and Japan for almost 3 centuries. After a long fight for national independence and unification, a complete state was finally established. Throughout the history of Indonesia, every aspect was given the characteristic of patron-client relationship. It not only played an important role in the process of Indonesia’s historical development, but also made a profound impact on the economic and political life of Indonesia.Chinese group is of vital importance to the Indonesian society. What is the position of this group in this Indonesia’s unique patron-client tradition? And what is the relationship of these two? This paper attempts to use historical cases as the point-cut instead of resorting to traditional ethnic theory and overseas Chinese research mode to discuss the form, degree and interaction of Chinese group’s participation in the patron-client relationship from colonial times to the modern period. I will also attempt to find out the characteristics of the overseas Chinese participation in the patron-client relationship. As for the main content, the paper introduces two kinds of the patron-client relationship and three periods to analyze the interaction of overseas Chinese and the local patron-client network. The first chapter gives an overall introduction of the Chinese group in Indonesia and the concept of patron-client relationship. As the most important part, The second chapter introduces the Chinese group’s participation in the Indonesia patron-client network before the second world war. This chapter is further divided into two parts, which respectively introduces the origin of patron-client and Chinese participation in patron-client relationship in the Dutch colonial period. The third chapter introduces the participation in Indonesia’s authoritarian period. It emphatically analyzes two major forms of the participation of the Chinese group in patron-client relationship which were called "AliBaba" and "CuKongism".The fourth chapter introduces Chinese group’s participation in the form of political parties during the democratization period. At last, based on the analysis of the former four chapters, the conclusion summarizes the Indonesian patron-client relationship and makes a democratic outlook for the future.
