Italian Neorealism successfully pushed Italian movies to the front stage of world movies, and the leader of the movement, Roberto Rossellini made a turn on his film creation. The change of Rossellini’s movie creation was closely related to the Italian sociological cultural environment. Italian’s culture remained developing even under the chaos social background; the mass culture and new media, appeared at the60s, changed the old Italian cultural atmosphere, especially the presence of television injecting new energy into Italian media environment. At the same time, the situation of film industry also underwent some changes. The temporary decline of Hollywood industry "offered" a new chance for the development of Italian movie industry, during when the Italian movies were more inclined to technological or commercial creation. Under the influence of social, cultural and movie atmosphere described above, Rossellini had a clearer recognition to the concept of Neorealism and to the large background of film industry. He combined reality together with history and injected it into the movie production, trying to trace back the steps of those great thinkers in history and using history to reflect the contemporary society.The history of humanity is long and colorful and the figures that Rossellini chose to make a film about are all those thinkers and politicians that made great contribution. The choice of him is rather subjective nevertheless, all those great people lived in an era of change, through numerous reflection and exploration, trying to find the recognition for themselves and the world. If we classify the people that Rossellini chose, we can tell that as the historical figure on the screen, Rossellini is more inclined to show the different stages of their lives and their life content. The talks and actions of those historical figures compose the essence of the movie and the drive of the plot. While presenting the environmental space of those historical people, the natural views and those cultural environment as a support are also presented, together with the historical figures’ talk and act, constructing a real space where the historical people live. Rossellini has a clear concept about movie and also a unique view towards the language of film. This is not only reflected from the application and the choice of close, medium and long shot, and montage, but also the organization, planning of the pictures and the switch of the scenes. Now, we can see the revival of those historical figures and the return of the movie master.The time when Rossellini was filming the historical figures was during the cultural transition time. As the first elite that entered television industry, Rossellini considered human as the main body of the era, leading with the concept of humanistic care and humanistic worth. His thought as a cultural elite though carried a little bit too much morality and social responsibility, but his sense of elite granted power to European television industry. Rossellini entered television industry with a purpose of spreading culture, making the sense of being an elite able to be spread through television. This was not only reflected from the reconstruction of tradition and the revival of values, but also from the power of creation and influence when spreading from television. As far as the type of movie is concerned, compared to classical documentaries or feature films, Rossellini’s historical figures with the characteristics of both documentaries and feature films, provided more possibilities for the exploration of the type of movies.
