Flower in the Mirror is a full-length novel that was written by LiRuzhen Who was a novelist in Qing Dynasty. This work blends theelements such as history, tourism, imagination and scholarship in one andit adopts the spoken language used at that time, which comprehensivelyembodies how the modern Chinese transits from Classical Chinese tovernacular Chinese. As a dialogic literature, it contains a large amount oflively spoken language and it can be used as an important corpus to studythe modern Chinese. Various honorific phrases in the text intuitivelyreflects the contemporary social and cultural features and speech state, itis an important aspect to form the unique style of works. At present, thestudy of Flower in the Mirror focuses on the ideological contents, artistry,and culture among Chinese and foreign similar works as well as Chinesesimilar works. Besides, some researchers study the work from linguisticperspective. Based on the rhetorical style, many people analyze thecharacteristics of appellation and adverb in the text; some peopleelucidate its rhetorical styles; some even discuss the special topic ondialectal affiliation, etc. However, few researchers have paid attention tothe linguistic features of the honorific phrases appearing in the text, not tomention the systematic study. This paper selects Flower in the Mirrorpublished in2011by Shanghai Chinese Classics Publishing House as anexample to collect and sort out the honorific phrases, and then it tries toexplore the book’s speech styles from special point to find some regularthings.This paper is divided into five parts:The first section is introduction. It mainly introduces the researchstatus about Flower in the Mirror, the honorific phrases of Flower in theMirror. Then it discusses the value, creation and research method. The second section cards the application of corpus about thehonorific phrases of Flower in the Mirror, and finds out its statisticfrequency. Then the paper puts forward its own classification criteria andit makes detailed classification. The paper analyzes the characteristic ofthe honorific phrases of Flower in the Mirror from the layers of speech,semantics and grammar.The third section explores the modest rhetorical style of Flower inthe Mirror. It collects and analyzes the six rhetoric figures such asmetaphor, metonymy, allusion, parody, hyperbole and separated wordsfrom the view of the modest rhetoric and the respect rhetoric.The fourth section analyzes the constraining social and culturefactors about the honorific phrases in the Flower in the Mirror. It makesrelevant analysis from two aspects such as socio-historical and culturalbackground. On the basis of subordinate culture of Chinese traditionaletiquette culture such as Hierarchical pecking concept and Meanharmonious culture, the paper discusses how cultural factors impact theuse of the honorific phrases in the Flower in the Mirror.The last part is the summary. It concludes the research productions,deficiencies and then it looks ahead the further research.
