In the late19th and early20th century, Famous Chinese painter Xu Beihong introduced western-styled sketching to Chinese painting, gradually the sketching method penetrates into the system of Chinese painting. The introduction of sketching has enriched the elements of Chinese painting. Particularly in the aspects of figure portraits, it has significant impacts. In this paper, an attempt is made to overview the blueprint of modern Chinese figure painting by studying in the figure freehand brushwork and applying sketching in the process of painting. Furthermore, the changes and developments of this system are better understood. The historical conditions of absorbing sketching into Chinese painting is researched to analyze the influence of sketching on figure freehand brushwork and compare the unique artistic form and modeling features between sketching and freehand brushwork, finally sort out the advantages of figure freehand brushwork based on sketching modeling. This paper focuses on the overall development configuration of sketching-influenced figure freehand brushwork, analyze and compare the similarities and differences of main characteristics between sketching and figure freehand brushwork.
