In this dissertation, I take contemporary Taiwan essays on diet as research objects, combing the categories of their themes, and analyzing the representations and artistic features of some specific diet images in historical context and in the prose text. From nostalgia to multiple themes, and with the territory of home and city memories which are sketched the contours by food, contemporary Taiwan essays show the special meanings of diet as cultural code in prose. The natural attribute of food is actually the embodiment of the ecological spirit in modern society, and the special diet images are the incarnations of Taiwan’s social and cultural changes. The sweet potato and pickles represent the tragic past of the hakka ethnic group and their reminiscent consumption view in modern times; there are dualistic thinking about beef noodles; and there are reverence and gratitude for millet and flying fish in aboriginal literature——all these form the complicated and various Taiwan diet culture. The literariness of contemporary Taiwan’s diet essays is reflected in its various artistic skills, such as the changes of title mode, the aesthetic requirements of figure and language, and the abundance in images, which make contemporary Taiwan’s diet essay become a picturesque style.
