A Study Of Translator’s Subjectivity

As the bridge and media of communication, translation activity has a longhistory in the development of human being, and has played an important role in thecross-cultural communication. However, as one of the most important participants intranslation process, translators were not paid much attention, nor were their statusconcerned from the very beginning. In the1970s, the emergence of Cultural Turnμ inWest made translators gradually enter in the stage from the backstage, and made theirsubject status increasingly replace the marginal one. Therefore, translator·ssubjectivity was received more and more attention from then, and there were alsomore and more studies about it.Mr. Zhang Guruo is a famous translator in China, who has devoted all his life totranslation career, respected by others due to his dedicated researches and uprightconduct. Zhang has read a large number of books, among which he has great interestsin Hardy·s works. He has made careful researches about the works, and translatedsome of them. Due to his elaborate studies about Hardy and his works, Zhang iscalled as expert of Hardyμ. Tess of the D’Urbervilles translated by Zhang Guruo isapproved and appreciated widely by scholars because of its faithfulness to the originaltext and fluency in language of his translation.There are numerous studies about Zhang·s translation of Tess of theD’Urbervilles. Some scholars focus on the comparison between this translationversion and other one on the basis of translator·s subjectivity. Some make studies onthis translation based on functional equivalence theory. Some pay attention to studylanguage features of Zhang Guruo·s. Based on the previous studies, this thesis willanalyze Zhang Guruo·s subjectivity in his translation of Tess of the D’Urbervilles.In this thesis, the manifestations of translator·s subjectivity will be analyzedbased on Tess of the D’Urbervilles translated by Zhang Guruo. It presents thesemanifestations from three aspects, including the selection of the original text, theselection of translation strategies and translation styles. Through the analysis aconclusion is drawn that translator·s subjectivity, including translator·s initiative in knowledge, individual preferences and aesthetic vision, has great influences on thefinal translation and its effects. At the same time, it is Zhang·s solid and deep Englishand Chinese skills, serious attitudes, careful studies and revisions and strongexpression force that make the translation not only transmit the meaning and intentionof the original author but also deliver the romantic charm of the original work.Therefore, this translation was widely accepted and appreciated by Chinese readers.
