Dan Brown has become well-known for his novel, The Da Vinci Code. Then theDan Brown wind blew strongly in successive years, making a miracle of Dan Brownand bringing his other major works under the spotlight again. Many critics andresearchers begin to analyze the phenomena and Dan Brown’s style. The thesis justtries to analyze the characteristics of Dan Brown’s genre in terms of the relationbetween classical culture and postmodernism around Brown’s four representativeworks.The thesis consists of three chapters with the parts of introduction andconclusion.The part of introduction introduces Dan Brown and his four novels concerned.Meanwhile, it elaborates the elements contributing to Brown’s success such aseducation, family and growth. It also summarizes up the latest researches about DanBrown’s works home and abroad. Besides, it shows why the thesis is written and whatmethods it takes as well.Chapter One deals with the influence from classical writers and literature on DanBrown, pointing out that Dan Brown inherits the classical elements and develops hisown style. In Dan Brown’s works, Shakespeare’s typical genre such as pun anddisordering of letters can be found and Steinbeck’s choice of theme can also be seen.Besides, Dan Brown has also borrowed the classical popular genre such as gothic anddetective. So variety should be a characteristic of Brown’s genre but Brown canabsorbs classical essences and keep up with times.Chapter Two analyzes the influence from classics on Dan Brown’s narrative. Thevariety of narrative is based on classics, which is the feature of Brown’s narrative.Dan Brown takes narrative full of suspense, overlapped narrative, narrative with grandtheme and narrative with rich culture knowledge to make his works readable and drawthem much closer to readers.Chapter Three focuses on the postmodernism of Dan Brown’s works from the angel of classics. The characteristic of postmodernism in Brown’s works is stillfounded on classical culture. Although his works are labeled as the style ofpostmodernism, the entirety of Dan Brown’s genre is versatile. Brown borrowsclassical popular culture to serve his postmodernism, not making his works strange tohis readers but consolidating their readability.In the end, the thesis draws its conclusion that Dan Brown’s genre is built onclassical culture, perfectly integrating classical elements into postmodernism, caringabout the mass’ tastes and winning readers and the modern market.
