Bohai State was a local prefecture of Tang Dynasty, whose main body wassumomohe peole and combines some other minorities of mohe tribe. It was mainlylocated in the northeast China, including some part the Korean peninsula and Russiancoastal areas. As a tributary state of Tang Dynasty,Bohai state was deeply effected ofTang Dynasty’s political，economic and traditional culture. It developed quickly andwas called “the prosperous country which in the eastern of the sea”.Bohai state was founded in698AD, and was destroyed in926AD.In the historyof more than200years, Shangjing city was the capital of the Bohai state for than160years. Obviously, it was very important for Bohai state.Shangjing city was one of the largest and the best-protected middle ages city sitein the northeastern of China. For the research of the city, we can not only investigateBohai state’s political system, administration unit, economic system and architecturaltechnology, but also can know more about the influence of Tang Dynasty to Asianconstruction.The archaeological excavations and investigations on Shangjing city were nearly100years and still go on. Because of the special historical background, the researcherfrom different countries did the archaeological research in different historical period.This essay will review the history of Shangjing city’s archaeological research,summarized the achievements, and then try to find the shortcomings and thelimitations in each period.This essay has5main parts. The first part is introduction; it will introduce thegeography and history about Shangjing city. The second part will introduce the historyof the archaeological research about Shangjing city. The third part will analyze the point about the excavation stages of Shangjing city and give some view point aboutthe stage division of the archaeological research about Shangjing city. The forth partwill introduce some other research about Shangjing city. The last part is conclusion.After hackle the achievements of the archeological research, the achievements will bedivided into two types: the excavation achievements and other parts achievements.The essay tries to find the relationship between different stages and conclusion thestage characteristics.This essay will also analyze the existing views about the research of Shangjingcity and then give some view point about the stage division of the archeologicalresearch.
