Tang·Parhae-Shangjingcheng Site is among the first group of national key units ofcultural relic protection proclaimed by the State Council of China. It is also the mostmagnificent city site in medieval times in Northeast China, and was regarded as the centre ofdomestic and foreign affairs of Parhae Regime. It is so far the single site that could provide uswith an overall glimpse of a large capital city in Tang Dynasty, and it is thus of importantsignificance for various disciplines such as city history studies, archeology and the study ofmunicipal structures of ancient China. There were a number of archeological studies onShangjing carried out in history, especially during the period of time from1998to2007, whensome institutions such as the Cultural Relic Archeological Institute of Heilongjiang Province,the Faculty of Archeology&Museology in Jilin University, the Faculty of Archeology inSchool of Anthropology in Sun Yat-sen University, as well as the Cultural Relic ManagementStation of Mudanjiang City, conducted a comprehensive excavation and gained greatarcheological achievements.This paper is focused on the protection and study of Tang·Parhae-Shangjingcheng Site,which includes: through document research and spot investigation, retracing the history ofShangjingcheng, studying on the archeological work and status quo of Shangjingcheng Site,reviewing the process of protection of Shangjingcheng Site, and at this basis making a briefassessment about the value and condition of the cultural relics in Shangjingcheng Site. Somefundamental questions concerning the protection of Shangjingcheng Site was concludedthrough analyzing the existing and potential problems faced with the protection ofShangjingcheng Site. Under the guidance of contemporary international theories on theprotection of cultural relics and in light of the site’s state of preservation, it verified someobjectives and principles to be applied into the protection of historic sites. Besides, it alsomade a discussion with a rather forward-looking perspective on the potential mode ofprotection and exhibition.
