Universal Design Of Wayfinding System In Urban Public Space

Wayfinding system is the significant approach of the instructions and the orders of the urbanpublic space as well as the key cog of the construction of the urban space surroundings. With theexpansion of the scale of cities and the emergence of new problems of globalization and aging,we have to put forward higher and newer requirements to design the wayfinding system. TheBarrier-free design used in the wayfinding system has been beyond the demand in consequenceof its shortcomings. The paper is concerned about the use of the universal design in thewayfinding system in order to not only make the wayfinding system serve as a contributing forceto improve the life of the majority of the people but also seek the appropriate method to makeuse of the wayfinding system to help people find the right roads and have a better knowledge ofthe environment and space, with the aim of making the most of the public space.The study starts from the interdisciplinary perspective, launching the analysis of theoryanalysis and empirical investigation. Through the discipline theory system of the wayfindingsystem and the universal design, we make conclusions of the guide information disseminationmechanism and wayfinding behavior model, putting forward the method of construction of theguide information flow. The preliminary theory constructed is the framework of universaldesign environment of wayfinding system. In terms of design principles, design methods aresummarized, putting forward specific design guidelines for the two aspects of the environmentand the logo design. The general and related design practice are made more feasible according tothe theoretical study that guides the system design scheme.The innovation point of the study is the combination of universal design and the wayfindingsystem and the analysis of the public space and environment context with the purpose ofexploring the general design principles and methodology to realize humanization design.The thesis consists of6chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, introducing the background, the present domestic andforeign research situation and methods, and introduces the purpose and the significance of theresearch.The second chapter is about the public space guiding parts of basic theory of the researchsystem and the two aspects of the built environment and environmental mark. Then, we makeanalysis of the basic theory and the research category of environmental sign system, combing thewestern design aspects of the history and context.The third chapter is the guide of universal design theory research system, expounding thebasic theory and the development of universal design. And we also discuss the design principlesof guiding sign system of universal design context and different people who concern the issue. The fourth chapter is the guide method of the system which is the general design theoryresearch on human Wayfinding Behavior to construct the model, describing the propagationmechanism mediated knowledge from the media studies. We put forward the guide knowledgeand the construction method of information flow. And on this basis from the two aspects of theenvironment and the built environment identification, it describes the general design method ofguiding sign system and guidelines.The fifth chapter is the part of design practice, based on Hangzhou Southern Song Dynastyimperial Street Da Tong Xiang, guiding the general design of system, to verify the theoryreflection and summary.The sixth chapter is the research Summary.
