James says "there are at least five hundred ways to tell a story." When objective matters in language cannot vividly describe an author’s thoughts, the author may place its inner feelings and aesthetic emotion in virtue of objective images. Image narrative is a notable feature of Mo Yan’s writing. The masterpiece Transparent Carrot written by Mo Yan takes the country and vast land as background. With the help of objective images of nature, it brings images into narrative text through abundant imagination; this novel builds a unique and rich image system in the Gaomi northeast land. His images are full of both touching beauty and disgusted ugly which is from nature, society to human beings. All these magical images make Mo Yan’s novel equipped with unique aesthetic features.This thesis is divided into six chapters. In the part of Introduction, it expounds the research background, research content and research meaning. And it classifies the literary resources on Mo Yan, and quotes the typical images of his works, so as to have a comprehensive analysis of the images. Chapter one gives the definition of images, combines the theories of western and eastern, it further interprets the images from the following three respects, the origination, meaning, and function; chapter two has an analysis of the different types of his images, according to the appearance of the image, it is analyzed from the aspects like color, animals, plants and humans, focuses on the typical ones, it gives the images its symbols and metaphors; based on the research of the previous chapters, chapter three has a study of the images’connotation from the aspects of mood, culture, and thoughts; chapter four focuses on the artistic features of the images, it further studies these images from the aspects like complicated artistic methods, various points of view, and the expression of feelings. The last chapter summarizes the previous fours chapters and draws the conclusion of this thesis, the images of Mo Yan’s works has an abundant connotation, with the aid of these various and abundant images with different connotations, Mo Yan blends his emotions of his homeland into the novels, reflects his mutual feeling towards the poor farmers and supplies a media for the reflection of history.
