The Upgrading And Downgrading Of Cases In English-Chinese Translation

This commentary integrates the framework of "case theory" into translation studies and raises the concept of "upgrading and downgrading the cases", i.e. transforming major cases in the source sentence into minor ones in the target sentence, or the other way round.This commentary suggests that translators analyze and categorize cases in the source sentence before translation begins. Moreover, during the translation process, they should rearrange the sentence structure by upgrading or downgrading the cases. Special attention needs to be paid to the differences in cognition between Westerners and Easterners, as well as the grammatical features of both languages.In doing so, translators will not only provide a translation that adheres as closely as possible to the original text, but also ensure that the target text fits in with the Chinese cultural background.
