Parody refers that people in a particular context mimic some existing proverbs, aphorisms, poems, lyrics, other materials and speech styles and then they change thematerials by increasing and decreasing words, transforming the word order, changingthe voice, imitating the pros and cons, and they use other ways through blending theirown ideas to create a new, unique language expression temporarily to express theirneeds, from which they can achieve a rhetorical expression which is humorous andthought-provoking.Over the years, researchers’ study of parody are mainly confined to rhetoric andcognitive science, sociology and other angles, and their subjects are mostly someadvertising and literature language, and the angles of film and television lines areignored. However, TV programs gradually make more and more impact on people’sdaily life in the recent years; so many scholars turn their eyes to the study of theParody used in the lines of films and TV programs. In fact, parody can be used with a large space in the lines of films, and it can bepresented in various forms. Therefore, with the perspective of relevance theory, thispaper tries to explore the similarities and differences between the parody used inChinese and English by analyzing the Parody used in Chinese and English films andTV programs.Relevance Theory has strong explanatory power in analyzing films lines. Underthe guidance of relevance theory, whether people can make full use of parody in filmssuccessfully mainly depends on if they can find out the best correlation between thebody and the parody phantoms. In order to achieve the desired communicative effectsof the movie, with the guidance of the best correlation between the body and theparody phantoms, people should make their best to help the audience pay minimumefforts and get maximum contextual effects through active imagination and reasonableinfer. In the perspective of relevance theory, an effective parody essentially refers tothe process of seeking the best correlation: there must be a connection between thebody and the parody phantom, the speakers imitate the words and verbal forms tocreate the phantom which can show their communicative intention (expressionprocess); on the basis of the specific contexts, the hearers constantly make efforts andthey make guess and hope to pay minimum efforts to find the best correlation betweenthe body and the imitation of body language, and get across the real meaning of the speakers, then they can get the best cognitive effects (reasoning). The generatingeffect of parody mainly depends that the hearers make extra efforts and they canidentify the association between body and phantom, which are the similarity, contrastand even conflict. Meanwhile, the translation studies of the films lines under theguidance of the theory parody can open new perspectives for the field of translationstudies. Therefore, this paper firstly attempts to use the theory to analyze the parodybuilding mechanism under the relevance theory; then it studies how parody is used inEnglish and Chinese TV programs and analyzes the similarities and differences of theparody used in the English and Chinese Television lines. In the last part of the article,it briefly discusses the parody translation under the guidance of the relevance theory.
