It is said that there are problems in the English teaching of non-English majorpostgraduates at CUGB, such as the shortage of English teachers, and the gap betweenstudents current ability in using English and what the society really needs. In China, the research on English learning needs analysis is not adequate and that ofnon-English major postgraduate is even less, so it is quite necessary to conduct aneeds analysis in order to know what they really need. Such a study will providereferences for teachers and school administrators for making appropriatemodifications in the current teaching.Based on Hutchinson and Waters’ learning needs and target needs theory, thestudy investigates the needs of non-English major postgraduates (grade1) in CUGBby looking for answers from three research questions.1. What is the purpose oflearning English for non-English major postgraduates in CUGB at present?2. Whatare the learning difficulties in terms of listening, speaking, reading, and writing?3.What adjustments should be made about the present curriculum to meet the needs ofstudents? And a questionnaire is adopted to answer these questions. The questionnaireconsists of three parts. There are in total27questions designed to cover the researchquestions. The first part is for personal information about the subjects. The secondpart explores their present state of learning, their purpose of learning, and their actualneeds. And the last section elicits students’ comments on the English courses.211participants are randomly selected from five schools in CUGB and are told to answerthem online. The results appear once participants submit the questionnaire online withthe technology of ASP.NET. The results demonstrate that their purpose of learningEnglish is related to their various current and future personal social needs, which isutilitarian and spurred on the instrumental motivation. The results also show theyprefer to improve their oral English and listening ability. From the aspect ofcurriculum, the dissertation suggests changes based on the finding as a reference for the English teachers.
