British missionary Frederick William Baller published The Sacred Edict with a Translation of the Colloquial Rendering Notes and Vocabulary in1892,accompanied by A Vocabulary of the Colloquial Rendering of the Sacred Edict, as a teaching material for missionaries of China Inland Mission to learn Chinese. This paper tries to analyzes The Sacred Edict with a Translation of the Colloquial Rendering Notes and Vocabulary to explore the important role that protestant missionaries play in the19th century in the cultural communication between Chinese and western. And explore the important role that protestant missionaries play between Confucian culture and the Christian culture in the Qing dynasty. As a sinologist, Chinese linguist and educator, Frederick William Baller wrote a number learning materials of Chinese. This paper tried to translate and analyze the text, analyze the concept of Frederick William Baller to write the Chinese learning materials, explore his Chinese teaching concept, show the situation and method of the early missionaries of learning Chinese, provide value to teach Chinese as a foreign language. This paper is divided into five parts:The introduction part introduces the research background of this article and literature review; The first chapter explores the translated situation of the text. including preach situation. The second chapter studies the general situation of the text, explore Frederick William Baller’s life and his basic attitude towards Chinese culture. Show the reason that Frederick William Baller selected The Sacred Edict to translate. The third chapter compared three protestant missionaries’ translation text, pr ovide the value of the text in Christianity and Confucianism exchange. The fourth chapter summarized the whole paper, provide the value of the text in Chinese and western cultural exchange and in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
