Mandarin Primer is a comprehensive Chinese textbook?Basic level?for missionaries written by the missionary Frederick William Baller based on his life and work experience in China in the 19^thcentury.The book has a total of fourteen editions,and the 12^thedition was published in 1921.Frederick William Baller made a revision to the book in the context of great changes of Chinese society at that time.This book had a great influence on the Chinese teaching circle at the end of the 19^thcentury.It is not only rich in content,perfect in compiling style,but also scientific in the compiling concept of cultural factors.The compiling concept of cultural factors advocated by the circle of teaching Chinese as a foreign language today is reflected in this textbook.The thesis consists of four parts.The opening part is the introduction,which explains the research object,research significance,relevant research home and abroad,research content and methods.The first chapter briefly introduces the life and main works of the author Frederick William Baller,the background and use of the 12^thedition of Mandarin Primer.The compilation of the 12^thedition was influenced by the great social changes at that time,so its content was innovative on the basis of the previous eleven editions.The cultural content was targeted,keeping pace with the times and practical,so the author chooses this edition as the research object of this thesis.The second chapter analyzes the cultural factors in the 12^thh edition of Mandarin Primer.First,the classification and statistical methods are explained,that is,the cultural factors in this book are divided into knowledge culture and communicative culture.Then the author makes a general analysis of the cultural factors and concludes that the cultural factors in this book mainly appear in the texts and annotations,and the proportion of communicative culture is larger than that of knowledge culture.In the third chapter,the author analyzes the compiling characteristics of Mandarin Primer from the aspects of selection,arrangement and introduction of cultural factors.The analysis shows that the book reflects the principle of tolerance and respect for different cultures,the principle of two-way culture,the principle of cultural contrast,the principle of combining traditional culture with contemporary culture,and the principle of combination of teaching and compiling.The cultural factors mainly appear in the texts and annotations.The introduction of cultural factors in the texts is interesting and colloquial.The footnotes and textual notes also explain well the cultural factors in this book.The introduction of cultural factors in this book focuses on the combination with students'interest,language teaching and practicality.Through analysis of the characteristics of cultural factors in the third chapter,the author has found the advantages and disadvantages of cultural compilation.Therefore,in the fourth chapter,the author summarizes the advantages of compilation of cultural factors in Mandarin Primer,such as representativeness,keeping pace with the times,purpose and son on,and points out the disadvantages of the book such as the insufficient practice of cultural factors,the lack of close connection between the sub-texts and the main texts.The thesis takes the compiling concept of cultural factors as the research object,hoping to provide reference for other scholars in the study of Mandarin Primer.
