| Under the background of economic globalization, the study of the translation of legaltexts has gained focus from the experts and scholars of legal profession and translation circle.This thesis takes the synonyms and near-synonyms as the object of study and tries todiscriminate the synonyms and near-synonyms in different English versions of the CompanyLaw of the People’s Republic of China, in the hope of concluding the specific and practicaltranslation methods of the legal texts and making the translation more professional andnormative.This thesis selects two English versions that are relatively authoritative to discuss: theversion of National People’s Congress and the version of Ministry of Commerce. In light ofthe word meaning theory of G. N. Leech, the register theory of M. A. K. Halliday and thefunctional equivalence theory of E. A. Nida, the author carries on a comparative analysis ofthe specific examples of the synonyms and near-synonyms in these two English versions,ending up finding the multi-dimensional properties of the synonyms and near-synonymsdiscrimination. That is to say, there are various aspects of factors involved in the process ofthe discrimination, such as the rich meanings of the words, the collocative rules and theemotional colorings, which need the translators to examine each word deeply andcomprehensively.Based on the study above, the thesis attempts to propose the methods of choosing thesynonyms and near-synonyms in the translation of the legal texts: the in-depth analysis of theword meaning, the comprehensive study of the co-text and the full use of the set phrases. Bythese three translation methods, the translators can grasp the exact meanings as well as theapplications of the words, thereby obtaining the qualified words among the numeroussynonyms and near-synonyms.There is still a long way to go for legal translators to perfect the legal translation, hencethe author hopes to help improving the quality of the translation through this thesis. |
