The comparative study of art is an important method in art research, especially in thestudy between Chinese art and Western art, and is adopted by many scholars at home andabroad. In the image analysis among arts, the comparative study is views as fundamental andimportant part. In fact, the vast majority of understanding about the feature of art and therelationship between arts come from the analysis and comparison among arts, and thesimilarity and difference among arts have to be studied only through comparative method. The difference of art forms among different regions can be understood by most people, but thesimilar art forms among different regions surprises many people. Apart from that, this similarartistic expression convey a series of problems outside images, such as the problem of the artdevelopment, the problem of the art communication and the problem of the art transmission, and so on. Obviously, in the study of abovementioned problems, the comparison betweenimages is the basic content of art study, and also the most effective research approach. Thecomparative study of Eastern and Western art has shown that there is similarity betweenWestern Cubist painting and Chinese folk paper-cut in art form, and many scholars agree it.Since first proposal on the similarities between Chinese folk paper-cut and Western Cubistpainting, it has been a hot issue in this field in recent years. However, previous studies oftenlimited to individual works, a few listed areas in the analysis of similarities, witch isunsystematic, and therefore it is difficult to have a proper command of overall features of thetwo.Comparison leads to distinction, contributes to reference, which promotes development, sois the case in the science of art. Modern studies of Chinese art history have shown that the artcreation is inseparable from the inheritance, reference, and innovation. Twentieth century isan important period of merging between Eastern art and Western art. Western Cubism paintingrise since the early twentieth century, has had a huge impact on the entire Western world, thesubsequent arts and crafts, decoration and sculpture and architecture. Chinese art masters likeXU Beihong et al., have been constantly concentrated on Chinese and Western painting, andmerged the research into the artistic practice. After the reform and opening up, many westernart trends have been constantly into our country, and thus there arise both “WesternPainting”as well as “Comprehensive Painting”,rooting in the influence of Western Cubism. It perspective for the merging between Eastern and Western art. Chinese folk paper-cut is animportant part of Chinese folk art. Calculating according to the paper-cut discovered inWestern Han Dynasty, it has the history of over2000years, but because of its rooting inrelatively isolated environment of the countryside and the one fold way in heritage, itsappropriate cultural status has not been approved by the mainstream of Chinese culture. Untilthe1940s, with the upgrading of the status of traditional culture, folk paper-cut eventually hascome to be re-examined. Folk paper-cut depends execessively on traditional culture, whichresults in its development bottleneck in the ideological and creative way. How to break thisbottleneck, and find a way-out to solve the problem is the issue that we now could not affordto overlook. The current world witnesses increasing economic and cultural exchanges, turning blindeyes which could only leads to stagnation in our way forward. For folk paper-cut, theexchange with foreign art and culture can provide some reference with the folk paper-cut artin art ideas, creative forms, etc., and contribute to merging new content on the basis ofinheriting traditional art culture. The similarity in art from and screen performance have laidfine foundation for the reference and exchange of two art forms. Fork paper-cut is embracingan unprecedented development trend, which urgently need more profound and systematicstudy of the two art forms. This paper, taking Chinese folk paper-cut as the core, adopting art comparative method, systematically carried out comparative analyses on Chinese folk paper-cut image and WesternCubist painting, focusing on comparing and analyzing such factors as the screenstructure, color composition, ways of thinking, historical and cultural factors. And the similarplaces of both are summarized below.(1) On the picture composition:①Both graphic and decorative patterns feature in thepattern. The majority in folk paper-cut is circular pattern, symmetrical pattern; the mostprominent of cubism painting is three-dimensional geometric expression; Folk paper-cut ismainly used for decoration and articles in folk activities, focusing on the decoration of interiorpicture, with rolling cloud design, sawtooth pattern, etc, commonly used; in addition tooverall decorative pattern in cubism painting, block surface of interior picture is also veryprominent.②As the basic language of painting, the concepts point, line, and block surfaceare used in the two art forms and make drawing language extremely abstract and conceptual. ③In the abstract two-dimensional performance of three-dimensional things, multi-pointscatter perspective method of expression is adapted by both, and thus not only realizing the arteffect of a rich art images, but also providing space for organization pictures.(2) On the colorcomposition: they both employ the combination and contrast between the different colors.Folk paper-cut takes the so-called soft and hard match; cubism painting is using so-called coldand warm alternating fashion.(3) On the way of thinking: they both emphasize the creator’sintuition and subjectivity. But there are obvious differences between the two:(1) Folk paper-cut is an important part of folk activities and passed on from generation togeneration. It took root in colorful traditional Chinese culture, the subject matter of works isrich, links with folk life, and is a true portrayal of folk life and yearning for an ideal life. It iscomplete and active in picture structure; the use of color is consistent with folk activities, forexample, bright red is used in festivals, both yellow and white are often used in funerals.(2) Cubism painting was influenced deeply by Western industrial revolution innineteenth-century, whose works have heavy color of machinery and often express anunderstanding of machines. The works stressed lines in the early days; the works have strongcontrast of color and the mechanism later; the screen images are dismembered andrestructured; the picture composition has obvious sequence.Besides, the two arts see such a few unique places being unable to surmount that isinfluenced by materials, and skills and techniques as, such as:In folk paper-cut, there are two kinds of image relationship of “yin” and “yang”between the picture background and the picture of things; it can shape a kind of linkingbetween the front and the back with the skill of fold and cut of paper, and reach cubistdecoration effect in three dimensions. In some works of cubism painting, there is an inter-presentation between the picturebackground and the picture of things; that use of photographic techniques in individual worksgains dynamic visual effect.
