In recent years, communicativeness, as an essential criterion for quality assessment in interpreting, is getting more attention from both researchers and practitioners. Being communicative imposes higher standards for being accurate and faithful. Prior studies have shed light on the importance of being communicative and have given some summary on how to assess and improve interpreter’s communicativeness, providing good references and ideas for this thesis.Enlightened by Erving Goffman’s sociological theory, this empirical study will reveal how the speaker’s role will influence the communicativeness of interpreter. The experiment applies quantitative approach in analyzing how much the subjects are influenced, coupled with qualitative analysis on how they are influenced in the interpreting procedure. Based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis, the thesis will give some coping strategies.Through the experiment, the thesis comes to following conclusions:The speaker’s role will influence interpreter’s judgment. When interpreter’s judgment fit the speaker’s role, the interpreter can easily get the "front" of the speaker, hence the improvement of communicativeness. Otherwise, the communicativeness will be compromised. In order to improve the communicativeness, interpreter should make use of the role analysis method and the "front" theory for better understanding of the identity and intention of the speaker.
