Abstract: Studies in interpretation theory saw rapid development since1950s;however, research in interpreting in China started a bit later than the western world.Even though more and more importance has been given to this particular field asChina plays an increasingly prominent role in the international community, SI study isstill in its infancy and it’s in urgent need to turn out qualified interpreters under theguidance of scientific and systematic theories.Currently, many researches have been generated regarding different aspects ofsimultaneous interpreting. But few of them have placed emphasis on the function ofthe text in SI. Based on the effort models in SI with text and SI without text which areboth deduced from Daniel Giles’ Effort Model, this thesis attempts to explore thepuzzle-whether the text helps or interferes with the performance of the interpreterin SI. In the empirical study,5-situation experiment models are established and therespective performance is evaluated by Deng Lijun’s assessment chart, which aims toshow how the help and interference take place and how the text affects interpreter’sinterpreting quality. The result of the experiment shows performance of the interpretervaries in the five set models. Interpreting with or without the text is not the onlycriteria to determine the quality of SI. SI with text doesn’t necessarily outweigh SIwithout text. Only when the three factors: text, preparation and speaker are all takeninto account, can the problem of whether the text should be used find the answer. Moreover, solving the problem has positive realistic meaning. It is pedagogicallyrecommended that SI without text (sight interpretation) be included in any cognitiveapproach to a simultaneous-interpreter training program. The paper also proposessuggestions for SI without text with a note on the limitations of the current studies andimplications for further studies.
