Biographies reflect the life and spirit of a person. Some general knowledge for source language readers, such as historical background and names of persons or places contained in the biography, however, may become barriers for target language readers to understand the works due to cultural differences. Therefore, translators need to compensate for the cultural defaults to help target language readers understand the works better. Annotations become effective ways for compensation. This thesis chooses to discuss Chapter1and part of Chapter2of HRC:State Secret and the Rebirth of Hillary Clinton, a2014bestseller of New York Times. Much knowledge about American politics is contained in this book. This author compensates for the knowledge that the Chinese readers are not familiar with through the way of annotation. In the thesis, this author mainly analyzes:a) the application of annotation; b) questions related to adding annotations.Based on translation theories about compensation and annotation, this author applies annotations in forms of footnote, in-text annotation and explanation and puts forward some points about "annotation or not" and the choices of footnote, in-text annotation and explanation in the text.
