In2014, the famous Colombian writer and Nobel Prize winner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez passed away. While the whole world is commemorating this Maestro of Latin American literature, people’s attention is again drawn by his eternal masterpiece-Cien Anos de Soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, better known by the English-speaking readers. As an important symbol of the Magical Realism, this work combines supernatural fantasy with conventional daily routines. Thus, the expressions in this novel is rather artful and complicated, which have become a great challenge for the translators. When facing such difficulty, translators must make a decision:to maximize the fluency of the translated text or to keep the original elements as much as possible? Guided by Lawrence Venuti’s domestication and foreignization theory, this thesis concentrates on the comparison between the most representative translations of Cien Anos de Soledad, in both English and Chinese languages, by Gregory Rabassa and Fan Ye respectively. The different methods that each of this two translators used will be analyzed in this thesis, and the pros and cons will be discussed.
