With a continuous push toward the globalization of academia, scholars in the higher education sector are increasingly under pressure to carry out research for international publication. This is the case with Chinese scholars working in universities and colleges. Given that English has become the language of international scholarship, more and more Chinese scholars are turning to international journals to publish their research. Choosing Chinese scholars in the field of applied linguistics as a sample, this thesis attempts to explore their perceptions of writing for international publication. The study aims to investigate the following three issues:1) the perceptions and attitudes towards language choice in publication,2) the problems occurred during writing and publishing in English, and3) the strategies adopted in dealing with English writing and publishing issues. Three in-depth interviews were conducted with professors in the field, which is complemented with data from a questionnaire survey and a case study. The analysis of the study indicates that considering the nature of research disciplines, the impact of research publication, the quality of domestic and international journals, English acts as their first choice for writing and publication. The results also reveal different linguistic and non-linguistic obstacles faced by senior and junior applied linguistics scholars, due to the reason of different academic experience. The last part of research finding informs pragmatic strategies for English writing and publication, such as reading previous literature, understanding the academic conventions of the target journal, writing an effective title, telling different "stories" in different ways and seeking assistance from professionals. Implications of the study are also presented in relation to facilitating the visibility of peripheral scholarship on the part of Chinese applied linguistics scholars, mainly through ERPP trainings, scholars’self-education and "center-theory-peripheral application".
