Director Teng Huatao, whose art works have achieved commanded ratings andreputation in both fields of television dramas and movies, is one of the leadingfigures of the sixth generation of Chinese directors. Since1995, Director Teng hasshot a total of13television dramas,"Floating" is his last work as a drama director.Among all his works, from "Double Sided Adhesive Tape"(2007) to "DwellingNarrowness","Naked in the Marriage","Floating" and other urban dramas havecaused enthusiastic responses from the majority of the audiences. These works havedrawn attention, and have raised a series of topics which have become the focus ofthe public. This paper attempts to study the narrative of Director Teng’s four urbendramas, analyze inner aesthetic characteristics and aesthetic value. In theintroduction part, a simple summery of Director Teng and his major works has beenlisted, and then the current research status and research significance of this paper onhis television works has been elaborated afterwards. The first chapter analyzes themeaning and aesthetic significance of narrative themes of Teng’s works. The firstsection analyzes the "topic style" aesthetic characteristic, elaborated in the aspects oftemporal spirit and secular ethics of the topics. The second section analyzes beautyand ugliness of desire as discourse core on three levels of expression of desire,emotional aesthetics of desire, and lost of ethics and morality. The third sectionanalyzes theme connotation of four dramas on levels of narratology and ethics,points out the conflict between traditional and modern ethics which was reflected bydramas, and indicates ethical aesthetic significance of Teng’s works. The secondchapter focuses on the analysis of the narrative features and aesthetic value of Teng’sworks. The first section analyzes daily life aesthetic feature in two aspects of daily narrative and daily life construction, and points out the aesthetic feature of itsconsumer culture. The second section, analyzes narrative structure, theme style,outcome, voice, and images through specific text. The first section of the thirdchapter elaborates aesthetic object and aesthetic subject from the perspective ofreception aesthetics. The second and the third section discuss narrative strategies andaesthetic acceptance from two aspects of public aesthetic orientation and audiencepsychological identity. The fourth chapter analyzes a series of art reflection on theban of "Dwelling Narrowness", and briefly summarizes of the director’s artisticpursuit. Mr. Zhu Guangqian, Chinese famous esthetician, when he discussedaesthetic criticism of art work, he opposed to interpret art works on basis of onetheory or one research method. It is always limited to analyze works, which is acomplex, with only one research, critical tools. The best way to understand works isvarious and comprehensive analysis and intervention. Various tool methods alsoshould be used for aesthetic research on television dramas, which is a kind ofnarrative public art. When I conduct narrative aesthetic research on Teng Huatao’surban dramas, I research comprehensively in aspects of aesthetics, narratology,cultural sociology, and ethics of the works.
