This project is a translation of the first chapter of How to Raise a Brighter Child from English to Chinese. The book, written by Joan Beck, was published on September1st,1999. The late Joan Beck wrote the award-winning "You and Your Child" column for The Chicago Tribune for many years, in which she brought coverage of new research on brain development, the battle against birth defects, and the struggles of parents to balance family and careers--all the while, raising two children herself. Later, she became the first woman member of the Tribune’s editorial board and her twice-weekly op-ed columns were syndicated in hundreds of newspapers nationwide. This book has been translated into eight languages and published widely around the world.The text that is translated,"Your Child’s First and Best Teacher:You", is the first chapter of this book, in which parents were told how to give their children ample opportunity to grow in intelligence during the irreplaceable early years of life. The purpose of this book is to report to parents about new research on the growth of children’s intelligence during the first six years of life and to translate this research from scientific journals, professionals’symposiums, and experimental laboratories into a form that will be useful to those who live and work with small children daily. It aims to do for your child’s mind what other books do for her physical and emotional growth.This project consists of two parts. The first part includes the original text and the translation of the original text. The original text is an excerpt (Chapter1:Your Child’s first and Best Teacher—You) of How to Raise a Brighter Child. The second part is a critical commentary concerning what has been learned and acquired as well as the translation strategies of the original text after studying the translation in detail. This essay is characterized by its precise language, clear structure and strong logic, which makes it difficult to translate. During the translation process, comprehensive understanding to the original text is the basis to break away from the fixed structure and freely express the information in idiomatic Chinese. Basically, translation difficulties in this project occur in two levels, i.e. lexical and syntactic. In terms of translation at the syntactic level, diversified approaches are applied to achieve the fidelity rule and coherence rule under the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida.A lot of books on childhood education and early learning can be found in the world. But this is a child-care book about your youngster’s mind, not his body. It will tell you not how to feed, burp, diaper, and put your baby back to sleep but what you can do to stimulate her mind to learn and grow. It concerns the nourishment you should be giving his brain, not his stomach. It is devoted to thinking, not thumb sucking. It holds that parents should spend more time—and can have far more fun—sharing a youngster’s delight in learning than fretting about toilet training. These kinds of books can also be found in any libraries or bookstores in China. Nowadays, more and more Chinese parents begin to attach greater importance to their only child and have realized the significance of family education for the growth of their child.
