Erhu, being one of the Chinese traditional instruments, has certain uniqueness of its tone,which is neither strong nor weak. Also, its compass, which is quite close to the human vocalsinging, is just at the most comfortable place of human hearing. Therefore, it significantlyachieves the desired lyrical effect when performing. Furthermore, performance techniques playa dominant role on driving the tone of Erhu being such infectious. Especially, being one of themost featured techniques, portamento playing skills are being focused on by this paper to bedone the further in-depth research.More specifically, this article mainly dwells up on the influences of portamento on playing,techniques, tones and so on through the aspects of categories and functions of portamento,various usages in different regional styles and issues to be noted when playing.
