| In the field of violin playing and teaching, the use of portamento has always been neglected. As a result, the phenomena such as the abuse of portamento and improper use of portamento for expressing the mood of music exist in large amount, Although a number of books concerning violin teaching touch upon the issue of portamento to some extent, few refer to the performance effect of different kinds of portamento, moreover they are all relatively brief or somewhat perceptual. So far, nobody has performed rational analysis and systematic summary on this issue. In order to fill in this academic blank, this thesis employs comparative study and psychological empirical method to explain whether or not the portamento can be used in specific piece of music as well as what hearing results can be produced by different kinds of portamento, in addition, relevant theories on aesthetics of music and psychology of music will be employed to analyze the cause of these performance effects, so that the result of study possess not only positivist but also logical reliability. Besides, the author makes some open suggestions on how to use portamento to meet the aesthetic standard of modern people under the influence of today's integrative aesthetic standard and how to use glissando innovatively and creatively in order to make the playing different from others.
