A Report On Bidding Documents Translation In Electric Power Engineering Corporations

The report is based on the translation materials in electric power engineering field completed during the author’s professional practice. The corpus is about the general instruction for the technical part of the bidding documents, consisting of project overview, environmental protection, meteorological data, technical description (mechanical, water system, water treatment, HVAC), electrical system, I&C, civil works, tests and acceptance, etc. Many scholars in China now hold the view that it is Chomsky who introduced surface structure and deep structure into translation or it is Nida who generated surface structure and deep structure in translation. Taking the situation into consideration, the thesis presents a development panorama of surface structure and deep structure, from its origin in linguistics by Chomsky to its introduction into translation by Nida. Through the analysis of the theory in English translation related to electric power industry, this thesis elaborates the application of the theory. The author attempts to provide translators with the essential translation skill and translation concept, that is, transformation between surface structure and deep structure, which can greatly prompt the accuracy and appropriateness of translation. Meanwhile, the thesis focuses on choice of close words frequently used in bidding documents from a microscopic perspective, aiming at difficult points during the translation internship.
