Application Of Varied Sentence Patterns In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpretation

Chinese and English originate from two different language families, the former being alanguage of TC model and the latter being a language of SVO model. Trapped by their greatstructural differences, many interpreter beginners are likely to overemphasize on minutedetails in their listening, comprehension and notes-taking and then interpret word by wordliterally, which in turn results in the neglect of comprehensive mastering sentence structureand leads to monotonous target language output of the source language and rigid adherence ofone sentence patterns.Based on the comparison of the structural differences and similarities, together withsentence patterns’ generalization of Chinese and English, this paper has analyzed variouskinds of examples excepted from the author’s daily interpreting practices and other occasionsand discussed application of varied sentence patterns in C-E consecutive interpretation bycomprehensively applying theories on sentences’ deep structure and surface structure andsentence patterns transformation of Chomsky. Through various interpreting examples ofdifferent versions and analysis of varied sentence patterns, this paper holds that variedsentence patterns can make language expression vivid and vigorous, interpretation moreaccurate and concise. This in turn will be conducive to an interpreter’s mastery of flexiblelanguage application.
