In the long course of development of Chinese calligraphy, theRepublic of China is a very short-live and unique period. At thiscomplex historical environment, the tradition of classical cultureand social basis for the survival have undergone a tremendouschange. Admittedly, the development of calligraphy has inferiorthan before, but still get a great development.More and more contemporary calligraphers have takenattention to the history of the Republic of calligraphy study, andpublished many insightful writings. But after careful observation, Ifound it the studies show a very unbalanced station, which thestudies of southern calligraphy is systematic, but almost becomes abroken belt for Northern calligraphy, especially for Shanxi. It hasnot yet formed a systematic exposition, the reason is due to Sparsedata, occlusive region, or less communication with the outsideworld. However, I believe that the history of the Republic of Shanxi calligraphy is a great era between past and the future. In this periodthere were many nationally calligraphers, as Wu Mingxin, ChenFengbiao Zhang Ruiji, Chang Zanchun, Chang Xuchun, Ke Huang,Zhao Tieshan, Jia Jingde, Ning Chaowu, Yan Xishan, Tian Runlin andso on. they are all dreams of calligraphy, and have lot of influence atthe time, even a lot of books wind of them still affects ourcalligraphy.I separately researched calligraphers’ life, thought, calligraphicstyle and works from the representative calligraphers by referring toancient books. Finally I summarized the history and style of thecalligraphy in Shanxi province. Through the study of thisphenomenon of calligraphy, in the paper, I revealed the artisticfeatures of Shanxi calligraphy in the Republic of China, laid thetheoretical foundation for our future to further explore the art ofcalligraphy in Shanxi, and gave some constructive comments fordevelopment. This paper consists of five parts:First, the study purpose and its significance.Second, the calligraphy background and style of the Republic ofChina.Third, the calligraphers’ life and works of the Republic of ChinaFour, other calligraphers of the Republic of China in Shanxiprovince.Five, the Influence and Inspiration of the reseach.
