Remuneration is the direct manifestation of the painting and calligraphy prices, and is thescale of professional fees charged by a painter, writer or calligrapher in the transactions over painting andcalligraphy. As a measure, remuneration is reflects the level of the art of calligraphy and painting, culturalaccomplishment, and social status. This article conducted a research on the remuneration of calligraphy andpainting in the Early Republic (1912-1937), and the researching scope was limited in Beijing and Shanghai, thetwo representative regions of art. We started from the basic form of remuneration, utilized the principles ofeconomics to interpret its economic value, analyze its different forms as well as cultural features through thetheory of analysis, and finally compared the revenues and living conditions of painters in the Early Republic.The full text was based on the painting and calligraphy remuneration, and sketched out the general form of artmarket in the Early Republic by linking painters, artistic works, consumers and market, which was a guide andreference for the contemporary Chinese art market boom.
