This translation project is to translate the excerpt from the book Reading Zoos: Representations of Animals and Captivity written by the celebrated American ecocritic Randy Malamud from English to Chinese, and subsequently give a report based on the translation. Through an examination of modern depictions of zoos, the painful suffering experience and captivity situation of the animals after they are taken away from their original habitat to the zoos, Reading Zoos aims at asking the readers to reexamine the true nature of zoos and people’s attitudes toward zoos as well as the relationships with animals and the ecological environment. The original text of this project selected from chapter1of this book Zoo Stories and it is the introduction as well as one of the most conspicuous parts that set the keynote of the ecocriticism. The completion of the project will facilitate further domestic study on Malamud and his works, and inspire the whole world on the protection of the animal as well as ecological environment. The translation report is comprised of three parts. The first part gives a brief introduction to the project, the purpose and the significance of the project as well as the translation theory applied in the project. In the second part, the author illustrates the translation strategies with specific analysis of ecocriticism based on the text classification as well as the theory of semantic translation and communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark. The third part summarizes practical application of the semantic and communicative approaches in translating this text and displays the benefits the translator has gained from this project.
