This dissertation is based on the study of Alice Munro’s short stories in her late period to analyze the opening characteristics which reflects from her fictions. There are a lot of uncertain information about the text expression and the structure in Munro’s later works. This paper analyzes the opening characteristics caused by those uncertainties from three aspects.Firstly, this paper analyzes the main narrative skills which form the opening characteristics in Munro’s later works from the perspective of subjective narrative time. In these works, the inconsistency of narrative time and story time causes the chain of plots flexible, resulting in openness of the structure and narrative time in Munro’s later works.Secondly, this article analyzes the openness of the structure in Munro’s later works combined with her specific fictions. We can summarize the incompleteness of the structure from two aspects: the skip and omission in the fictions. Finally, the novels of Munro have a lot of vague and incomplete places in the plot and ending on the set, left to the reader the infinite daydream space. Her novels are often not in accordance with the cause and clear results. The jumping structure makes the novel fuzzy and vague which appears in the plot. The openness in Munro’s novels relates to her open philosophy of life that she thought everything is changing. This paper will discuss the opening characteristics in Alice Munro’s novels.
