Strategies In Rendering English Active Rhetoric Techniques Into Chinese In Literary Translation

This is a report on the translation of a novel, Amaryllis at the Fair, which was written by the English nature writer Jefferies Richard. The story takes place in Coombe Oaks, U.K., where the heroine Amaryllis, a sixteen-year-old girl, lived. Through narrating such trivial and common daily life stories as Iden, the heroine’s father, planted potatoes, Amaryllis went to the fair paying a visit to her grandfather and toured with him around the Pamment Mansion, and Amaryllis drew and sold portraits trying to balance the household expenses, the novel presents us the happiness, sufferings and helplessness in life.As a literary work, this novel is beautifully written. Apart from the delicate description of those picturesque sceneries, the author also created lifelike characters via their sophisticated mental activities, appealing to the readers to keep on reading. Besides, while telling the story, the author would now and then express his own opinions or feelings, as if he were thinking together with the readers. During his creation, the author created many special stylistic effects via employing a large number of rhetorical devices. Since these rhetorical devices can be found not only in the portrayal of the characters and the environmental description, but also in the development of the story, they have constituted an important part of the writer’s style. Hence, this report will focus on the rhetorical phenomena that the translator has encountered and illustrate how to reproduce the stylistic effects of source text into target text by adopting different translation strategies.
