This report is on the translation of The Nightingale. Kristin Hannah, a New York Times Bestseller, is the author of this novel. The Nightingale was the Goodreads.com Best Historical Novel of 2015. This novel hasn’t been translated into Chinese yet.The report selects The Nightingale(chapter 2—5) as the translation text. In this text, in order to enhance the effect of language expression, the writer uses various rhetorical devices, such as simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, etc. And the simile is used the most frequently. These rhetorical devices polish the novel as well as increase the vitality of the novel.This report focuses on the translation of rhetoric devices in the text. The author starts with the case study of rhetoric devices. And in the light of Mr. Yu Lisan’s classification of rhetoric devices, the author makes a detailed analysis of the lexical stylistic devices, phonetic devices and semantic devices in the text. In addition, the translation strategies are the key part of the report. In the process of translation, how to understand and translate the rhetoric devices are the difficulties and challenges the author must face. When translating the novel, the author takes the translation strategies, the literal translation, replacement, compensation and abandoning and so on to cope with these rhetoric devices.Through the translation, the author has learned that when translating the rhetoric devices in literary works, one should have sound knowledge about rhetoric devices. Meanwhile, one should adopt different translation strategies to cope with the rhetoric devices in the text and improve the readability of the translation.
