Translation Studies Of Rhetorical Devices In News English From Cultural Perspectives

News English, as one of the important ways in the cultural exchange between China andthe west, the translation of News English plays a vital role in supplying Chinese people withthe latest world news. In the competitive media circle, News English writers tend to userhetorical devices to add vividness and vigor to news reporting in order to draw readers’attention; rhetorical devices in News English also bring lots of new words and expressions,which promote cultural convergence between china and the west. However, because of thegreat discrepancies between Chinese and English and between the two cultures, how to bettertranslate rhetorical devices in News English and why they promotes the cultural convergence,pose difficulty for English learners.According to functionalism, translation is a purposeful activity, and the Skopos Theorymaintains that the “skopos” or purpose determines strategies of the translating process, andtranslators should make suitable adjustments in accordance with the purpose to meet the targetreaders’ needs. This thesis attempts to study translation principles and propose some usefulstrategies for translating rhetorical devices in News English under the guidance offunctionalism. In the process of translating rhetorical devices, it brings lots of new words andexpressions into our daily life, which gradually stimulates the phenomenon of culturalconvergence between the west and east.This thesis consists of seven parts. The first part is the introduction, mainly discusses thepurpose and significance of this study, and then proposes the research question. Part two doessome literature review, finding out the limitation of previous studies. Part three discusses theprinciple and classification of translating rhetorical devices in news English. Part fourdiscusses the most frequently used rhetorical devices in News English and their functions, andeach one is illustrated with examples, which demonstrate how rhetorical devices add flavorand depth to the news. Part five discusses the systematic translation strategies of translatingrhetorical devices in news English under cultural perspective. Part six puts emphasis on thecultural adaptation and convergence brought by translating rhetorical devices in news English,which is the highlight of this study.News English is a kind of effective medium, together with the cultural exchange and cultural convergence, the common cognition of human beings on the global village will beenlarged, the distinctions between different nationalities will be reduced, and also thetranslatability between different languages will be enhanced.
