Zhou Yang: Struggled In Politics And Literature

As one of the leading figures of Chinese literature and art in the 20 th century, Zhou Yang was a highly complex and tragic figure, hidden behind whom are numerous political and literary disputes. From the perspective of literary theory criticism, Zhou Yang is really an eminent literary theorist. In the development course of Chinese modern literary theory, as a Marxist literary soldier, Zhou proposed "the typical theory", "national defense literature","freedom theory on cultural activities” and socialist realism, which enriched the construction achievements of Marxism literature theory in China. To be judged as a political leader, Zhou had ever struggled, wavered and experienced brainstorming since he handled the leadership in literature and art. From the ideological remolding activities among intellectual to political purges which swept the whole literature and art circles, Zhou had never firmed his position. He was stirring in his own juice and ultimately submerged in the wave of the Culture Revolution.Via the concrete analysis of Zhou as a scholar and a politician, the pulse of Chinese modern and contemporary literary theory could be touched.At last, this paper stands in the angle of psychology of literature and art, by means of mental analysis, tries to analyze Zhou’s personality characteristics, psychology and belief,especially the influence of his religious faith mentality on the development of his political life and literature fate, as well as the countless ties among them. Thus stepping into and researching Zhou’s inner heart, of which reflection on his political and literature life could also be discovered. Ultimately, Zhou’s contribution in the construction of Chinese modern literature theory could be affirmed, while his limitation and shortage still existed. In the case analysis, the historical development skeleton of Chinese modern and contemporary literary theory could be depicted.
