Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is a multi-ethnic populated area where people of different ethnic groups love singing. Therefore, Guangxi enjoys the fame of “the ocean of songs”. The Zhuang people, being the major group among the minorities in Guangxi, boast a thousand-year-long tradition of singing and a custom of preferring singing to speaking. As the major modes of expression, memorizing and inheritance of the Zhuang people, folk songs carry the emotional value and cultural gene of the ethnic group. A majority of the existing Zhuang folk songs are polyphonic ones, most of which are two-voice ones and a few are three-voice ones. However, with the development and advance of the era, the survival foundation of Zhuang folk song is fading away and there have been crises in the performance and passing on of the folk songs. There lies a problem in front of us to effectively sort out and analyze the characteristics of Zhuang folk songs and preserve the polyphonic chorus works of Zhuang folk songs as well as pass them on to our descendants. Based upon this, this thesis analyzes the polyphonic chorus works in Zhuang style, summarizes the characteristics in terms of their melodies, harmonies, structures and so forth, probes into a deeper understanding to the inner spirit of the Zhuang chorus works and interpret the Zhuang polyphonic chorus works in a more reasonable way. This thesis consists of four parts: the first part is introduction briefing the rationale and significance of the selected topic; the second part is an outline of the original Zhuang polyphonic folk songs in Guangxi with emphasis on analyzing the characteristics of Zhuang polyphonic folk songs; the third part is an analysis on the adapted Zhuang polyphonic folk songs, which explores various kinds of Zhuang polyphonic folk songs at length; the forth part analyzes the conduct techniques of Zhuang polyphonic chorus works from the perspective of chorus conduct and explores the way to reasonably interpret the characteristics of Zhuang polyphonic chorus works. It is hoped that this thesis can contribute to the passing on and development of Zhuang polyphonic folk songs and shed light on the conduct of Zhuang polyphonic chorus works.
