The song cycle Frauenlieb und leben is composed by Germany’s famous musician Robert Schumann based on the poem written by poet Adelbert von Chamisso(1781-1838) in 1840 which elaborates the affective processes of a lady making acquaintance with her lover, falling in love, marring him, bearing children and dying. This paper can be divided into three chapters. The first chapter explains Frauenlieb und leben including its genres, subjects, and creation background. The second chapter analyzes its music creation features from the perspectives of dramaticism, musicality and nationality. The third chapter is carried out from mezzo-soprano tendency, signing editions of famous mezzo-soprano, my singing experience and understanding. This song cycle is performed by a glittering array of singers especially sopranos which has great literature value. I, as a soprano have once performed the song in yearly solo concert. Thus the writer thinks that in view of the reserved plot, warm and soft music of this divertimento, using mezzo soprano can better exert the “tragedy” color displayed by this divertimento. By expounding this vocal divertimento, it can strengthen the voice part consciousness of art songs during the romantic period played by the mezzo soprano, which has the reference significance on enhancing the music expressiveness and appreciation of mezzo soprano.
