Robert Alexander Schumann (1810-1856), is an outstanding composer, pianist and musical critic of romanticism in the 19th century. He has created a lot of fine works of vocal music and instrumental music all his life. Frauenlieb und leben op.42 takes an important position among more than one hundred artistic songs composed by Schumann, and also embodies the composer's essence of romanticism in his musical works. The divertimento was written by the composer in 1840, impressed with the German poet Chamisso's poem. It portrayed a woman's first love in her life in simple and true tone of lyric, which underwent the process of love, marriage, motherly affection and death of husband. The work was popular with its deep emotion and created quite a sensation among the audience by its characteristics and power of poetic picture and fresh simplicity.Through the portrayal of the rise of the European romantic music and artistic songs and the introduction of Schumann's life and about the composer Chamisso, this paper examines the background of the creation of the divertimento Frauenlieb und leben op.42. It give an analysis of the combination of music and poetry, full of the musical style of romanticism, stressing the expressiveness of piano and connection between music and daily life, bearing the air of German folk music and showing the bright artistic features. In the study of the performance of the song, the paper makes a review of the pronunciation of vowels and consonants in German, introduces some frequent problems in singing the song and proposes my own opinions on how to deal with them. In the exactness and rhythm of the divertimento, based on my experience of performance, I sum up what should be paid more attention to in the work, emphasizing the creative rhythm and the value of notes in each stanza. It also analyzes the syntax and breath, the control and performance of shade, the pace and tempo. From different perspectives, the importance of the emotion in the divertimento Frauenlieb und leben op.42 is exactly explained. There is a detailed explanation of the eight sections in the paper. Compared with the version of the same song of great masters, I expected to learn a lot about the use of sound, division, pace rhythm and techniques in order to expand my horizon of artistic knowledge and to be enlightened in my singing practice. As a postgraduate majoring in vocal music, I developed a deep passion for the piece of music through the study of the original materials and practical singing on the concert. I feels that is of great value to make further study about it. Therefore, I gathered a lot of materials, study of the German pronunciation, analysis of the videotapes and other comprehensive devices to explore deeply the implication of the divertimento and its ideological thoughts. It is founded on the many aspects the music contains: the pronunciation of singing, rhythm, shades, pace, expression, device and so on to make further explorations, so that the audience can have a thorough and deep understanding of the its image and lively recognition. The paper has a special purpose to hope to arouse the interest of more people who in devoted themselves to the study of vocal music and call more attention of teachers to the artistic songs. Through the appreciation and study we can raise the quality and technique of vocal music. On the other hand, through this paper, it provides a reference to those who study and sing the vocal music work of Schumann, to fill up the gap in the musical theory in the singing of the song, and hope to help a little to those who are involved in the study of the this subject.
