This is a report on the translation of Clever, Creative, Modest: The Chinese Language Practice(Chapter 4) written by Hui-Ching Chang. In this chapter Chang discusses the Politeness Principle in the interpersonal transactions of Chinese speaker. The translator summarizes the translation process and the problems encountered in the process. This academic text on intercultural communication belongs to informative text, so the translator chooses Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the guidance of the translation process. The translation of informative text should obey the principle of “faithfulness” and correctly transmit the idea of the English text. Meanwhile, the reaction of the readers should be emphasized. This problem-solving process includes two aspects, the translation of words and the translation of sentences. In terms of words and sentences, the translator uses methods of amplification, conversion, division, inversion, omission, repetition and so on. In a word, the translator should, on the basis of accurate understanding, aim to transmit the idea of the source text with concise and sentences and achieve the equivalent and communicative effect.
