The translation project is from Frommer’s Grand Canyon National Park, one of the famous books: Frommer’s Travel Guides. The author translates the third chapter Exploring the Grand Canyon,to introduce the basic information and travelling strategies to Chinese readers so that they can better enjoy the trip.It has certain practical significance to translate English travel guides into Chinese when transnational tourism flourishes. There are three types of text according to Newmark’s Text Type Theory: expressive text, informative text and vocative text.Exploring the Grand Canyon is both an informational text and a vocative text, because it is written not only to provide information but also to attract visitors. The original language is plain, the knowledge involved is wide and there are many modifiers, parentheses, and participial constructions, which are difficulties in the translation.Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory stresses the same effect between original readers and target readers.Under the guidance of this theory, considering the differences between English and Chinese, the author uses five translation methods to better convey the accurate information as well as the communicative effect.Amplification, omission, conversion are used on the lexical level, and division and word-order adjustment for the sentence level.the author hopes this report can provide some help for E-C translation in tourism texts. |
