| Founded by the famous, innovative scholar Pan Yan tong and the rich gentleman Li Guo lian in 10 th, February, 1898, the Chinese Students Review is a journal of periodical appearing once every ten days. This academic journal, as a translation of the western journal, majorly introduced western knowledge and propagandized innovative ideology in Guangzhou area, and played local roles in affecting the public voice during the Political reform movement. The main columns of the Chinese Students Review were domestic affairs, diplomacy, culture, military, history and civil affairs, and the topic was “no officialdom, no politicâ€, however, the journal exhibited obvious character of advertising the Political reform movement as its papers were written by translating and referencing others’ view. Although being not so strong and direct as other innovative publications in its words and comments, the writers in the Chinese Students Review disseminated the necessity of reform through citing and quoting the scriptures. The journal paid great attention on the development of the political system, human geography and comprehensive strength in western countries, and devoted much space in part of “Translation of Western Culture†to introduce the western knowledge and their advanced scientific and technological achievements. It provided a good platform for the Chinese especially the intellectuals to know the western knowledge and the status of the western countries, broaden the people’s vision and took positive effect on broadcasting the western culture and the cultural communion between china and the west. Considering the reform thought and rich western knowledge advertised and introduced by the Chinese Students Review, this journal has become the most important document for researching the cultural communion between china and the west during this period. |
