The Confucian Analects is a highly regarded book of classic for studying Confucianism as it recorded and compiled rather thoroughly the thought discussions and conversations among Confucius and his students. Whenever the topics of self cultivations are being reviewed, many quotations in the Confucian Analects will be referred, pondered, or even cited by many scholars be them from the East or West.Nevertheless, due to the diversity in cultural formations, differences in resolving respective social and historical challenges coupled with the divergence in habitual behaviour and crisis settlement experiences, it is inevitably that the interpretations towards self cultivation from Oriental and Western scholars are likely, though majority may be in concurring opinions, of certain degree of disparity; be it explicit or implicit. The objectives of this Thesis is hereby aiming to conduct a comparative study pertaining such interpretations among the 5 meticulously selected copies of Confucian Analects (i.e.2 from reputable Chinese scholars and the remaining from renowned English scholars), so that their relevant similarity and or differences will be compared, debated and tabled accordingly. These copies and other relevant referring books are all listed in the thesis.Hopefully, with the conclusive findings, this Thesis will be enabling those future interested parties, who are keen in researching profoundly the related comparative studies, an initial yet value-adding, if not a fulfilling, guide and research model. |
