An orchestra is a large instrumental ensemble that integrates different sounds of instruments into coherent, gorgeous melody. By creating various musical images which form sharp contrast with another, it endows itself colorful musical appearance. An orchestra is good at playing great works through which expresses complex and profound thoughts and feelings. The flute is indispensably employed in an orchestra. As an important member of woodwind, the flute is credited as "Coloratura soprano"for its soft sound, broad range and diverse performing techniques. That is why composers usually allocate important melody fragments to the flute. The flute, couple with other woodwind instruments, generates pure harmony to describe some artistic situations or to make the melody stand out. In addition, the flute can perform rhythm music or serve as a main accompanist. This paper, based on the understanding of the flute and an orchestra, draws a conclusion on the fluteā€™s function in an orchestra and explores some methods to improve its performance. As one of a team of an orchestra, what a flute player needs to do is not only play the flute, but also pay much attention to cooperation with other instrument players. Technique is important in performance, but not as essential as the music itself. With enough techniques, the player must study continually to develop his ability for a better understanding of music and culture, and therefore finally improve his performance. The paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the development and characteristics of the flute and orchestra. The second chapter discusses the application of the flute in an orchestra by analyzing some typical flute fragments. The third chapter explores in intonation problems, rhythm problems, timbre changes, techniques application, the cooperation with other woodwind instruments, training tips for the flute players and the adjustment of performing state, etc.,expecting to have a better performance. The fourth chapter makes it a point that performance of high quality needs players to accumulate more and think more in music and culture.
